Received a comprehensive briefing from the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak this afternoon on the upcoming project phase, current challenges, and the Department’s key functions, followed by a visit to the treatment plant.

Wastewater management plays a crucial role in the sustainable... development of any growing city, ensuring that water sources remain unpolluted and waste is properly treated. Phase 1 of the Miri Sewerage System focused on building the main infrastructure backbone, which has been completed and is now operational, currently serving parts of the commercial area within the Central Business District (CBD). The next phases will progressively extend coverage to more areas within the CBD and nearby residential zones, with the ultimate goal of connecting all properties in Miri to a unified and efficient sewerage system network.

In 2004, the Sarawak Government began formulating policies to guide sustainable urban development, which led to the enactment of the Sewerage Systems and Services Ordinance, 2005 to regulate wastewater management. To support this, the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak was officially established on 1 October 2007 to implement and enforce the Ordinance. Now operating under the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, the Department oversees all sewerage-related projects, ensuring effective regulation, maintenance, and improvement of sewerage systems across Sarawak for cleaner and healthier urban environments.
