\n The Federation of Malaya achieved independence from British rule.
\n
\n \ud83d\udcc5 22 July 1963 \u2014 Sarawak Self-Government
\n Sarawak was granted self-government, with Sarawakians taking responsibility for the administration of the state and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan becoming its first Chief Minister.
\n
\n \ud83d\udcc5 31 August 1963 \u2014 Sabah Self-Government
\n Sabah, then known as North Borneo, marked the end of British colonial administration and the beginning of self-government.
\n
\n \ud83d\udcc5 16 September 1963 \u2014 Formation of Malaysia \ud83c\uddf2\ud83c\uddfe
\n Sixteen days later, the Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore came together to form Malaysia, following the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
\n
\n These dates are not competing histories. They are different chapters of the same Malaysian story.
\n
\n Understanding them helps us appreciate the journeys of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak before they came together in 1963, and why 16 September holds such significance in our shared history.
\n
\n As Malaysians, remembering our history should bring greater understanding and respect for one another across regions, cultures and generations.
\n
\n 63 years later, may we continue moving forward together, respecting the foundations upon which Malaysia was formed while building a stronger and more prosperous future for everyone.

\n The haze situation across Sarawak has worsened, with several areas already recording Hazardous air quality. Here in Miri, the API\/IPU reading is currently within the Unhealthy range and appears to be increasing, so please take the necessary ...<\/a>precautions, especially if you need to spend time outdoors.
\n
\n According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), children, elderly persons and those who are more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution should take extra care during this period.
\n
\n Everyone is advised to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, keep doors and windows closed where appropriate, stay well hydrated, and monitor the latest official API readings. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable during significant haze, wear a properly fitted N95 mask where possible.
\n
\n Please seek medical attention if you experience breathing difficulties, chest discomfort, persistent coughing, severe eye irritation or other worsening symptoms.
\n
\n The Sarawak Government and relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation. Cloud seeding has been identified for 3\u20135 September, subject to suitable cloud formations and atmospheric conditions. Cloud seeding cannot create rain without suitable clouds, and the operation is also intended to help replenish dams and water supply sources affected by the prolonged dry spell.
\n
\n Some parts of Sarawak are already experiencing Hazardous air quality, so even though Miri has not reached that level, let us not take the situation lightly.
\n
\n Please take care of yourself and your family, especially our children and elderly. Drink plenty of water, minimise unnecessary outdoor activities and continue monitoring the official updates.

\n Hari ini membawa makna yang cukup istimewa kepada saudara dan saudari kita di Semenanjung Malaysia dan Sabah.

\n Pada 31 Ogos 1957, Persekutuan Tanah Melayu mencapai kemerdekaan. Enam tahun kemudian, pada 31...<\/a> Ogos 1963, Sabah mencapai pemerintahan sendiri (self-governance), manakala Sarawak telah mencapai pemerintahan sendiri lebih awal pada 22 Julai 1963.

\n Walaupun perjalanan sejarah kita mempunyai tarikh dan kisah yang tersendiri, hari ini kita berdiri bersama sebagai rakyat Malaysia dengan kepelbagaian budaya, bahasa dan latar belakang yang menjadi kekuatan negara kita.

Conducted a site visit together with the Council Engineer and contractors to inspect the completed drainage upgrading works at Taman Merbau.
\n
\n These projects were funded under the N73 Piasau Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), submitted by YB Datuk Sebastian Ting. The first and second ...<\/a>phases of the upgrading works have now been completed, and we are looking into the next phase of drainage improvement for the residential area.
\n
\n Taman Merbau is one of the earlier residential developments in Miri, and many of the existing drains have aged and deteriorated over the years. Upgrading the entire drainage system requires a substantial amount of funding, so the works have to be carried out progressively in phases.
\n
\n During the visit, we inspected the completed works and also looked at other sections of the drainage system that require attention for the next phase.
\n
\n I will continue working with the Council\u2019s engineering team to look into the overall drainage system at Taman Merbau, identify the priority areas and seek the necessary allocation for further upgrading works.
\n
\n There is still more to be done, and I will do my best to ensure the drainage system is progressively improved for the benefit of the residents.
\n

Conducted a site visit to Kampung Luak to check on the progress of the ongoing upgrading works from the existing earth drain to a new concrete drain.

\n Joining me during the inspection were KK Rahaman, the Council Engineer and the project contractors. We went through the ongoing works on site and checked the progress to ensure that the project is being implemented properly.
\n
\n Good drainage infrastructure is important, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Upgrading earth drains to concrete drains will help improve water flow, reduce erosion and minimise drainage-related problems for the surrounding community.
\n
\n Thank you to everyone involved for taking the time to be on site. We will continue to monitor the progress until the project is completed and delivered for the benefit of the residents of Kampung Luak.

\n Road safety has always been one of Datuk...<\/a> Sebastian\u2019s priorities. Every year, allocations are set aside to improve lighting at dark spots within N73 Piasau, as well as to progressively replace the older street lights with LED lighting. The improvement in brightness and visibility is significant, especially at night, making the roads and surrounding areas safer for motorists, pedestrians and residents.

\n Infrastructure improvements like these may seem simple, but good lighting can make a real difference to the safety and comfort of a neighbourhood.
\n

Thank you for sharing your vision of environmental sustainability with the people of Miri and for demonstrating how small individual actions can collectively make a significant impact on our environment.

\n I was honoured to be part of this eco-brick journey a few years ago while serving as the Chairman of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Standing Committee. It was inspiring to witness how discarded plastic bags and plastic bottles could be transformed into eco-bricks instead of ending up in our landfills, rivers, or the sea.
\n
\n Eco-bricks are more than just recycled plastic, they represent a practical and innovative solution for reducing plastic waste while creating useful infrastructure such as benches, planters, landscaping features, playground elements, and other community facilities. They remind us that sustainability begins with simple actions taken by every one of us.
\n
\n I hope this beautiful Seahorse Sculpture will not only become a new landmark at Miri Eco Cliff Park but also inspire more people, especially our younger generation, to embrace environmentally responsible habits and play their part in protecting our planet.

Together with my fellow Councillors from the City Infrastructure Standing Committee, I conducted a site visit to Milea 1 following feedback from residents regarding several issues affecting the neighbourhood. The visit also provided us with the opportunity to inspect the maintenance works carried ...<\/a>out by the Council\u2019s contractors and engage directly with the residents.
\n
\n During the inspection, we identified several matters that require attention. Some of the Spider Plants along the roadside had not been properly maintained, resulting in overgrown vegetation that has become a potential hiding place for snakes, raising safety concerns among residents.
\n
\n We also observed that certain tall plants at road junctions had grown excessively, obstructing motorists\u2019 line of sight when making turns. This poses a safety risk to both drivers and pedestrians and should be addressed promptly.
\n
\n Another concern raised was the obstruction of back lane footpaths by plants, pots and other personal belongings placed by some residents. These access ways are important, particularly during emergencies, as they may be needed by the Fire and Rescue Department. Keeping them clear is a shared responsibility for the safety of everyone in the neighbourhood.
\n
\n In addition, we noted cases of livestock being reared within the residential area, which have resulted in unpleasant odours and hygiene issues affecting nearby residents. Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the relevant Council by-laws.
\n
\n I would like to thank the residents of Milea 1 for taking the time to share their concerns with us. Regular site visits are essential to better understand the issues on the ground and to ensure that our public spaces remain safe, clean and well maintained. By working together, the Council and the community can continue to build a cleaner, safer and more liveable Miri for everyone.

I had the honour of representing YB Datuk Sebastian Ting at the Food Fair 2026, organised by Persatuan Serebrum Palsi Miri (Miri Cerebral Palsy Association), affectionately known as Wisherland Miri.

\n This event holds a special place in my heart. I am truly grateful to have had the ...<\/a>opportunity to learn more about cerebral palsy since 2020, when the Association\u2019s founding President, the late Katherine, approached Datuk Sebastian seeking assistance in establishing their centre at Piasau Camp.
\n
\n I still remember her unwavering passion and determination. Together with a group of dedicated parents, family members and volunteers who shared the same vision, she worked tirelessly to create a safe and supportive environment for children with cerebral palsy and their families. Her dream was not only to provide access to therapy and rehabilitation, but also to build a community where parents could find hope, encouragement and support from one another.
\n
\n Early intervention is vital for children with cerebral palsy. The earlier a child is identified and receives the appropriate therapy, the greater the opportunity to improve their quality of life and reach their fullest potential. Wisherland Miri has become an invaluable platform that helps make this possible while offering comfort and strength to families throughout their journey.
\n
\n Running a centre like this is never easy. It requires continuous funding to support qualified therapists, dedicated staff, specialised equipment and daily operating costs. Yet despite these challenges, I have witnessed this centre grow from humble beginnings into one of the finest community-based facilities of its kind in Miri, providing quality services at an affordable cost to families who need them most.
\n
\n I would like to pay tribute to the late Katherine and everyone who has carried on her legacy with the same dedication and compassion. Your selfless commitment has touched countless lives and given hope to many families.
\n
\n I also encourage everyone to support Wisherland Miri, whether by attending its fundraising events, making a donation, or simply helping to raise awareness about cerebral palsy. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps ensure that more children can receive the care and opportunities they deserve.

\n As we celebrate this special occasion, let us also remember and honour the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem (Tok Nan), whose vision ensured that this important chapter of our history would never be forgotten. On 23 April 2016, he announced that 22 July would be observed as Sarawak Day, and on 10 May 2016, it was officially gazetted as an annual public holiday for Sarawak. His leadership strengthened our appreciation of Sarawak\u2019s unique history and identity.

I had the honour of representing YB Datuk Sebastian Ting at the Charter Installation and Fundraising Luncheon of the Lions Club of Miri North City, held at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club.

\n The occasion was made even more special with the presence of the Guest of Honour, Lion Mark ...<\/a>S. Lyon, International President of Lions Clubs International, who travelled to Miri for this meaningful event. I was deeply honoured to receive the Lions International pin from the International President himself and to be invited to join Lions Clubs International, a global service organisation with more than 1.4 million members. I sincerely appreciate this recognition and look forward to working together with the Lions fraternity in serving our community.
